Richard Wayne Penniman was born in Macon, Georgia, on December 5, 1932. For complications at birth, he had a slight deformity that made one of his legs smaller than the other.
He began singing in church at a young age. In October 1947, fourteen-year-old Richard sang before a performance at the Macon City Auditorium. In 1949, he began performing in Doctor Nubillo's traveling show. In 1950, Richard joined his first musical band, Buster Brown's Orchestra, where Brown gave him the name Little Richard. Richard recorded a total of eight sides for RCA Victor.
On May 9, 2020, Richard died at the age of 87 at his home in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
