What is networking:
A network is set of hardware devices connected together, either
physically or logically to allow them to exchange information
Classification:
Networks are often divided by size and general
communication method into three classes:
1. LAN (Local Area
Network): Small networks in a house. WLAN (Wireless LAN) that connect devices without wires, using radio frequencies
or light. It usually connects wireless devices to each other and also to the
wired portion of the network.
2. MAN (Metropolitan Area
Networks): The networks created in small region or a city. It also can be with
wireless sometimes called WMAN.
3. WAN (Wide Area
Network): In the world. Example Internet we found everywhere. That’s mean it’s a
wide area network. Started at USA and end at our home. There is also the term
WWLAN (Wireless WAN), which just refers to a WAN that uses wireless technology.
There are more few terms to classify networks.
* PAN (Personal Area Network): it generally
means a very small LAN with a range of only a few feet, used by a single person
or by a group. It also can be wireless PAN (WPAN). For an example: Bluetooth.
* CAN (Campus Area Networks): CAN is one
created to span multiple buildings in the same location, such as the campus of
a university
Now imagine that
there is no network in this word. But me and one of my friend thinking to connect
our PCs and want to share our resources. Can u tell me how can we connect our
PCs? There is no option without wire. Yes Wire! We can connect our PCs with
wire. Wire will be a Media, which will carry data from one computer to another. So
we have to know little about media.
Types of Media:
Types of Media:
There are two types of media
1.
Guided
2.
Unguided
Guided Media: Wire
Unguided Media: Wireless
(Infrared, Blue tooth)
Here we are
thinking about Guided Media. So we should know the types of wire.
There are 3 types of cable we use as Guided Media.
* Coaxial Cable
* Twisted pair Cable
* Fiber Optics
