Edwin Jack Fisher was born on August 10, 1928 in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania of United States. Both his parents are Jewish immigrants from Russia. Fisher had talent as a vocalist at an early age and began singing in numerous amateur competitions, which he usually won. He made his radio debut on local Philadelphia radio station WFIL. He also starred in Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, a popular radio show that later moved to television.

After performing on Eddie Cantor's radio show, he became an instant hit and gained nationwide recognition. Fisher was drafted into the US Army in 1951, sent to Fort Hood, Texas for basic training and served a year in Korea. From 1952 to 1953, he was the official vocal soloist of the United States Army Band and a member of the tenor section of the United States Army Band Chorus assigned at Fort Myer in the Washington, DC Military District.

After discharge from the US Army, he started singing in top nightclubs and had various television series. Fisher has performed in top concert halls across the United States and headlined the main showroom in Las Vegas. He headlined the Palace Theater in New York City as well as the London Palladium. In 1957 he signed with the newly opened casino named "Tropicana Las Vegas".

Fisher was first married to Debbie Reynolds in 1955 and divorced in 1959. They had two children. Fisher's second marriage was to Elizabeth Taylor in 1959 and divorced in 1964. Fisher's third marriage was to Connie Stevens in 1967 and divorced in 1969. They had two children. Fisher's fourth marriage was to Terry Richard in 1975 and divorced in 1976. Fisher's 5th marriage was to Betty Lynn in 1993 and lasted until her death in 2001.

On September 9, 2010, Fisher broke his hip in a fall and died 13 days later on September 22, 2010 at the age of 82 at his home in Berkeley, California. His ashes are interred in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park next to his wife Betty Lynn who died in 2001.

Fisher has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for recording, at 6241 Hollywood Boulevard, and one for television, at 1724 Vine Street.
