Ricky NelsonSingerEric Hilliard Nelson was born on May 8, 1940 in Teaneck, New Jersey. He was the second son of entertainment couple Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. As his family moved to Hollywood, Ricky remained in Tenafly under the care of his grandmother. In November 1941, the Nelson family purchased their permanent home on Camino Palmero street in Los Angeles. Ricky joined his parents and older brother there in 1942.
Eight-year-old Ricky first appeared in the radio series in 1948. Nelson starred in the film. He made his film debut in "Here Comes the Nelson" (1952). Nelson played drums from his early teens, learned basic guitar chords and vocally imitated his favorite rockabilly artists. He was strongly influenced by the music of Carl Perkins and once said that he tried to imitate the sound and tone of the guitar break in Perkins' hit "Blue Suede Shoes".
With the help of his father, he signed with Verve Records. On March 26, 1957, he recorded "I'm Walkin'" (Fats Domino's song), and "A Teenager's Romance". "I'm Walkin'" reached #4 on the Billboard charts and its flip side, "A Teenager's Romance", hit #2. In the early summer of 1957, Ricky Nelson signed with Imperial Records, and recorded, "B-Bop Baby", sold over a million copies and reached number 3 on the charts.
When the television series went on summer break in 1957, Nelson took his first road trip and played four states in Ohio and Wisconsin. After his tour, he decided to form his own band. Their first recording was "Believe What You Say". In 1958 and 1959, Nelson had twelve hits on the charts compared to Elvis Presley's eleven. From 1957 to 1962, Nelson had 30 top-40 hits, more than any other artist except Presley (who had 53) and Pat Boone (38).
On Christmas 1961, Nelson began dating Kristin Harmon (June 25, 1945 – April 26, 2018). They were married on April 20, 1963. After years of legal proceedings, they divorced in December 1982. They had four children. On December 31, 1985, Nelson died in a plane crash.
