History of Bangla Songs
Jaydeb was the royal poet in the court of Laksman Sen – the last king in the Sen line (1117-1199). His subject was the legends of Krishna – especially the love phase of Krishna and Radha. The language is a mixture of Sanskrit and PrakritaJaydeb songs continues to be sung in many eastern Hindu temples. The oldest of the Middle Age manuscripts was written by Baru Chandidas. The theme like Jaydeb, was the life and love of Krishna. The Middle Ages saw a mixture of Hindu and Islamic trends when the musical tradition was formalized under the patronage of Nawabs and the powerful landlords baro bhuiyans.
The Bauls are a group of mystic minstrels (Muslim Sufis and Hindu Baishnos) from the Bengal region, who sang primarily in the 17th and 18th centuries. and described "superfluous" differences between religions.Lalon Fakir, who lived in the 19th century in and around Kushtia, Bangladesh, is considered to be the greatest of all bauls.
Lalon Fakir (1772 - 17 October 1890) born in Cheuriya, Kushtia, Bengaladesh, was a prominent Bengali philosopher, Baul saint, mystic, songwriter, social reformer and thinker. Considered as an icon of Bengali culture, he inspired and influenced many poets, social and religious thinkers including Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and Allen Ginsberg.
The greatest personality in Bengali music is Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). Tagore was a prolific composer with around 2,230 songs to his credit. His songs are known as Rabindra Sangit ("Tagore Song").
Another influential body in Bengali music is Kazi Nazrul Islam (1899-1964). He is the national poet of Bangladesh.
